Holiday Health Safety

Engaging Content

"The holiday season can be a busy, joyous time filled with good food, travel, and visiting with family and friends. This can also be a time when individuals with complex medical conditions or those on hospice services are at greater risk for adverse events and complications. Awareness of choking hazards and foods that may cause increased edema or swelling is essential. It is also important to ensure patient safety by reducing risks of falls and by planning and preparing for travel no matter how short the trip. Here are some tips to keep your loved ones safe and feeling their best during the holiday season."

Dementia: Engaging the Mind and Body

"Dementia is a brain disease and progressively worsens over time. It is a disease that affects memory, thinking, and behavior. Many families struggle to know how to include their loved one with dementia in daily activities. They may also be unsure which activities benefit their loved one’s cognition or behaviors. Participating in activities such as puzzles, looking at old photo albums, and taking a walk are beneficial for patients with dementia and are also a great way to spend quality time with loved ones. Studies show that those who participate in brain-stimulating activities may prevent or slow the development of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease."

Hospice at the Holidays

Tangible Resources

"As the holiday season approaches, the weather begins to cool, seasonal activities begin, holiday gatherings occur, and family traditions are made. This is often a beautiful season spent with family and loved ones while sweet memories are made. However, the holiday season can also be very lonely and challenging for those going through complex health diagnoses or for those whose loved ones have passed. Despite the complicated feelings surrounding the season, the holidays can still be meaningful and memorable by supporting and including family members nearing the end of their lives and by reminiscing about and honoring those we have lost."

Symptom Series: Dyspnea

"Many common symptoms are experienced at the end of life, including nausea, dyspnea, pain, loss of appetite, weakness, and confusion. Dyspnea, or shortness of breath, can lead to anxiety, discomfort, and reduced activity, all leading to decreased quality of life. Symptoms such as dyspnea can be distressing, but a trained hospice and palliative care team can often manage them effectively at home. Treatment for dyspnea may involve both pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical therapies and can lead to an increased quality of life for the patient."
